I have read a lot of light novels, many of them published by J Novel Club. Most volumes have a few proofreading mistakes and instances where the English is incorrect. This volume is filled with them. In addition to the usual mistakes—incorrect case, words not agreeing in number, etc.—this volume suffers from these more critical and prominent mistakes.* Most notably, it seems the head chef has a name, but it was left blank in this volume. It simply doesn’t exist: “... , the Head Chef, ...” with one location being a possessive composed only of an apostrophe and ‘s’.* In the last chapter, I believe the landlord, not the landlady, is present in the apartment, judging from the surrounding text. This was especially confusing given that speakers aren’t clearly indicated in this light novel.* The other thing that really stands out to me is in several conversations, Ryoma will be thinking before speaking, but instead of speaking his public thoughts, at the end of the paragraph, the last sentence is italicized. Then immediately after, someone else in the conversation will respond to those italicized thoughts, as though they are reading his mind. I suspect those italicized lines should have been in quotation marks instead.In at least one passage, a word was chosen that means exactly the opposite of what is implied by context. The text says “You may think that training child assassins is beyond reproach” but the context implies “reprehensible” instead. Perhaps the translator conflated “beyond the pale” with “reproachful” and came out with “beyond reproach”. (I don’t think anyone would consider training child assassins to be beyond reproach!)I hope that JNC publishes a corrected version of this volume soon, because the story, like previous volumes, is such a fun read. And while mistakes can happen in any text, the proofreading at JNC seems to be getting worse—not that it was outstanding to begin with.Moving on to the content itself, this volume details the events which happen to Ryoma on his way to and at Gaunago, the city where the Jamil family live. The volume is not especially action-packed even by the standards of this series, but it does progress the plot by closing up some open threads (Ryoma’s needed visit to the Jamil estate and a few smaller things) while opening a couple new ones (new product ideas, hiring a new team member, and a new evolution, among others) — although nothing we have not seen before.The one thing I found disappointing about the story is that Reinhart makes a rather grand proposal to Ryoma that is not mentioned again afterwards. Ryoma is supposedly taking some time to think about it, but hearing more of his thoughts regarding that proposal throughout the volume would have made things a little more real.Elia and her new school friends are absent from this volume, for those of you who look forward to those episodes. There are also no visits with the gods in this volume.I would not call this the best volume of the series thus far, but it is one that any up-to-date reader will want to read as well. Without the proofreading mistakes, I would give it a 4-star rating. Not entirely sure why I enjoy reading this slice-of-life story about an OP protagonist who works more on product development in a fairly optimistic wholesome world then fighting monsters, but I do. It is slow-paced though, very slow paced, not an issue for me (yet), but then again, you really should not be expecting action packed story this far in the series.As for the slavery aspect, it is more indentured servitude then slavery, but it is depicted relatively positively. I am not entirely sure why this rather optimistic depiction of people/slavery is a thing in these kind of light novels, and personally I can ignore it, but it is something to keep in mind when reading the story. At times it is also a bit confusion what is thought, what is said or what is thought and then said. Not sure whether it is a translation issue, but it was confusing at times...So, an enjoyable quick read, but nothing thought provoking or something that kept me spell bound.
